The essence is obtained by steam distilling the peeled, dried rhizome of Iris florentina, the most valuable and scented variety of iris. The extract has a characteristic woody scent of violet, with sweet, fruity and floral notes (middle note) used mainly in the perfume industry.
Description
A perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Iridaceae family, originating from the Eastern Mediterranean regions, characterised by a large rhizome with lots of roots which, when steam distilled, produces the essence, which solidifies at room temperature. The plant has elongated leaves and cylindrical stems that reach up to a metre in height, topped by symmetrical white flowers tinged with blue.
Notes
The name comes from that of Iris, the messenger of the gods, who came down from the sky on the rainbow, symbol of the end of the storm and of the peace of nature. The symmetrical, three-petal structure of the flower reflects the values of wisdom, trust and courage. According to ancient tradition the use of this perfume is said to increase these virtues in the user.
